The British Columbia Ministry of Education requires that children with special needs be provided with Individual Education Plans ("IEPs"), to allow them to achieve their potential in their education.

A parents' guide to Individual Educational Plans was produced by the British Columbia School Superintendents Association and the British Columbia Ministry of Education. It outlines the responsibilities of the local school board to provide IEPs for childrenwith special needs.

There are many different things that may be in an IEP. Most Often, IEPs are made for children who are struggling, and can contain goals for that child which are different than those in the prescribed curriculum for most children (i.e. social and/or emotional goals as well as academic ones), adaptations to allow the child to more effectively reach his or her goal (such as changes in physical environment - ball chairs, pencil grips, more time to take tests, etc.), and modifications in the goal itself (the child may not be able to read at grade level, and a lesser goal may be more realistic).
