American Funds Norfolk
A mere 8 kilometres long and just 5 kilometres wide, Norfolk Island is a three million-year-old volcanic outcrop located south of New Caledonia, east of Australia and north of New Zealand.
Norfolk Island was first settled by Polynesians in the 14th or 15th centuries. It is believed that the first European to sight the island was the celebrated British explorer Captain James Cook, in October 1774.
The American Revolution of 1776 began and the British authorities needed to find new destinations to which to deport convicts. Making use of Cook’s observations and records, Australia and Norfolk Island were chosen and the First Fleet sailed to them from England in 1787.
